Modern diesel engines are highly efficient, yet still, produce some amount of soot due to incomplete combustion.  Soot is essentially unburned fuel that leaves the combustion chamber through the exhaust valves as very small carbon particles.  These individual particles can then combine with each other and form much larger soot particles as they cool and travel out the exhaust system where they eventually cause visible black tailpipe or stack emissions.  Even the most efficient diesel engines create some soot. It is inherent in the engine design. This has led to regulations that require the use of in-line exhaust treatment hardware to remove as much diesel particulate matter (“DPM”) as possible before it escapes into the environment.

Regen units can fail to burn off all the soot for a number of reasons leading to poor engine performance.  For example, the vehicle might not run at operating conditions that produce sufficient exhaust temperatures to burn off the soot in accordance with the DPF design requirements.  It is also possible that soot output from the engine exceeds the expected amount because of mechanical, fuel or operating condition issues.  This excess soot can easily overwhelm the DPF and its capacity to regenerate.  A trip to the shop and some unplanned downtime and expense is the typical result. Clearly, anything that can be done to reduce soot formation upstream of the DPF will help with these problems.

As just one example, a fleet customer in Utah reported in February 2015 that after 120,000 miles of usage in their 2013 trucks with Cummins engines, the CleanBoost fuel treatment alone reduced opacity readings up to 31%, particulate filter cleaning/scrubbing was reduced by 33-100%, soot readings from oil analysis were reduced by 38-62% and fuel injector replacements were virtually eliminated.  DEF Urea usage was reduced by 9-52% and fuel consumption declined 3-10%.
